KUALA LUMPUR – Following a warning issued by police that a protest over the rising cost of living planned for tomorrow is illegal, its organisers Turun Malaysia have stood their ground and said the demonstration will proceed as scheduled.
According to a report by FMT, Undi18’s Qyira Yusri said she and the rest of the Turun Malaysia movement will hold on to the right to assemble as enshrined in the federal constitution.
Qyira stressed the importance of the issues that the movement plans to raise, saying that is precisely the reason why the protest will proceed as planned.
“We will hold on to that right,” she said, as quoted by the news portal.
Meanwhile, Universiti Malaya students’ union president Ooi Guo Shen was insistent that the protest should take place, saying that the members of the public “need to be brave” and step forward to vent their frustrations.
“Even if there’s no notice given to the police, we will proceed,” he was quoted as saying.
Earlier, the public was advised by police not to participate in the protest scheduled to take place tomorrow outside Sogo, here.
In a statement today, Dang Wangi police chief Noor Dellhan Yahaya said the force had not been informed of the protest as required under the Peaceful Assembly Act 2012.
“The public are advised not to participate in the protest. Action will be taken against those involved.”
Yesterday, Turun Malaysia called on Malaysians to gather at Sogo by 2pm, saying it would be demanding for ministers to take pay cuts, subsidy measures to be maintained, the channelling of better assistance to those in need, and for the government to control the price of goods and ensure food security. – The Vibes, July 22, 2022
