Costco has recalled a popular pasta product in the U.S. over a potential health risk to customers with a shellfish allergy.
On Monday, the U.S. Department of Agriculture’s Food Safety and Inspection Service issued a public health alert for a Giovanni Rana item, labeled as “Rustic Beef Sauce & Creamy Burrata Cheese Ravioli,” because some batches in fact contained a shrimp filling in lobster sauce.
The problem was discovered after Giovanni Rana received complaints from two consumers who said the product contained shrimp ravioli, not beef sauce and burrata as advertized.
The labeling error poses a risk of a serious allergic reaction for people who have a crustacean shellfish allergy and don’t see the ingredient listed in the allergen statement.
Costco announced a recall of the ravioli in a recent memo to customers. The items were sold in 32-oz. plastic bag packages, with Use By dates between May 14, 2026, and June 25, 2026, and the establishment number 44870.

Affected ravioli bags were produced between March 10, 2026, and April 21, 2026, and sold at Costco stores in New Jersey and Maryland.
While there haven’t been any illnesses to date, Costco is urging customers to avoid eating the ravioli if they have a shellfish allergy and return it to a Costco store for a full refund.
Lobster and shrimp are both classified as crustacean shellfish, which is one of the nine major food allergens in the U.S., along with eggs, milk, soy, wheat, fish, tree nuts, peanuts and sesame. Allergic reactions to these foods vary but can range from hives and lip swelling to severe, life-threatening symptoms that may involve fatal respiratory problems.
The pasta is one of several food products that Costco has raised concerns about in recent months. In March, the warehouse recalled its Meatloaf with Mashed Yukon Potatoes and Glaze because an ingredient in it was potentially contaminated with Salmonella, a bacterium that causes food poisoning.
The affected meatloaf products had sell-by dates between March 5 and March 16, 2026. Recalled meals were sold at Costco stores between March 2 and March 13 in 26 states.
In February, Costco recalled its Mini Beignets filled with Caramel after discovering the pastries were accidentally filled with Chocolate Hazelnut, which was not listed on the product’s labeling. The error poses “the risk of severe life-threatening allergic reaction” for someone who is allergic to tree nuts and consumes the beignets.
The recalled product was sold at Costco stores in 22 states between January 16, 2026, and January 30, 2026.
