Country music legend John Anderson dies aged 71

John Anderson, the country music star behind hits including “Swingin’,” “Seminole Wind” and “Straight Tequila Night,” has died aged 71.

The singer died peacefully in his sleep on Wednesday, October 21, his family confirmed in a statement shared on social media. No cause of death has been announced.

The highly influential musician had only recently attended the 2026 Country Music Hall of Fame induction ceremony on October 18.

A statement on the musician’s Instagram page read: “It is with the heaviest of hearts that we share the passing of our beloved husband, father, grandfather, and best friend.

“To the world, he was a gifted country music singer whose voice and songs touched countless lives. To us, he was so much more. He was the heart of our family, the one who made us laugh, loved us fiercely, and made every ordinary moment feel special.

“We are completely heartbroken.

“His music will live on, but for us, his greatest legacy will always be the love he gave his family and the memories we will carry with us forever.

“Please keep our family in your thoughts and prayers as we grieve this unimaginable loss.”

Tributes have flooded in for the beloved star from across generations.

Tim McGraw, who only caught up with John at the ceremony in Nashville at the weekend, shared: “I was talking with John Sunday night at the HOF ceremony.

Alongside a picture of the pair at the event, he shared to Instagram: “He was in such good spirits. We talked, we laughed, we sang his songs that I loved so much together, just goofing off.”

The 59-year-old star continued: “I am completely heartbroken by his passing.

“There will never be a stylist in music, any music, that was so defining as his. It’s just devastating. All of our love goes out to his family and the country music community. He was and is one of the defining voices in country music. So great. I am completely shook.”

No Doubt frontwoman Gwen Stefani, 57, commented underneath the family's official statement: “We loved him!! His music is part of our family's hearts forever!! Gx.”

Country veteran Reba McEntire, 71, wrote: “One of my favorite people in this business. I sure will miss you, John. Love you and your music always.”

Jason Aldean, 49, said: “One of my all time favorites. I Grew up listening and learning to play guitar on all my dad’s old John Anderson albums. I was Lucky enough to have met and performed with him a few times over the years. Sending Thoughts and prayers to the family. He was a great one. You’ll be missed bud.”

Luke Combs, 36, wrote: “Damn. Rest easy John. Thanks for the songs.”

John began his recording career in 1976 when Warner Bros. Records brought him onto its roster. Within a few years he was on major national tours, joining Merle Haggard and Willie Nelson in the early 1980s.

During his starry career, the musician earned five number-one singles, including 1983’s “Swingin’” - which spent one week at the top of the Hot Country Songs charts. The hit went gold and received a Single of the Year award from the Country Music Association.
