Police arrested a couple in Johor Bahru for stealing RM19,300 worth of jewellery from a gold shop in Mersing, seizing a car and items.

MERSING: Police have arrested a couple in Johor Bahru believed to be responsible for a jewellery theft in Mersing.

The theft involved items worth RM19,300 stolen from a gold shop in Endau.

Mersing district police chief Supt Abdul Razak Abdullah Sani said authorities received a report about the incident last Wednesday.

A team from the Mersing Criminal Investigation Division arrested the 28-year-old man and 24-year-old woman, both locals, in Johor Bahru last Friday.

The arrests took place between 10 pm and 11.40 pm.

“Police seized a car and two sets of jewellery, which were linked to the theft, for further investigation,” Abdul Razak said.

He added that both unemployed suspects have prior criminal records related to drugs.

Their recent urine tests, however, returned negative results.

The case is being investigated under Section 380 of the Penal Code for theft.

The couple has been remanded for four days starting yesterday under Section 117 of the Criminal Procedure Code. – Bernama
