A young couple who had recently gotten to know each other through social media was detained on suspicion of committing khalwat (close proximity) at a hotel in Segamat on Saturday night (6 December), with enforcement officers also discovering blood stains on the blanket in their room.

The Johor State Islamic Religious Department (JAINJ), in a statement, said the raid was conducted at about 10:30 PM after the couple failed to open the door immediately when officers knocked.

“The door was only opened five minutes later by a woman wearing a T-shirt and long pants while holding a vape.”

“Upon realising the presence of enforcement officers, the woman attempted to close the door but failed. The officers then introduced themselves before entering and asked the woman to put away the vape,” the statement said.

Further inspection found a man sitting on the carpet looking anxious. Both individuals, in their 20s, were not related by blood (mahram) and were not from this district.

According to JAINJ, the woman was a student at a college in another state and had come to Segamat to meet the man, who works in the district.

“During the inspection, officers found the woman’s underwear and bra on a chair. The bed and blanket were also crumpled and messy, believed to have been used before the officers arrived.”

A dried blood stain, about the size of an old 50-cent coin, was also found on the blanket. The source of the blood could not be determined,” the statement added.

Additionally, two wet towels and several personal items belonging to the woman were found in the closet, but no clothing belonging to the man.

Hotel records showed the room was rented under the woman’s name for two days.

“This was the second day. It could not be confirmed whether the man had been there since yesterday or only arrived on the day of the incident,” JAINJ said.

Both individuals will be charged under Section 27 of the Johor Syariah Criminal Offenses Enactment 1997.
