A late-night scene in a quiet corner of Taman Universiti, Parit Raja, took an unexpected turn when enforcement officers from the Johor State Islamic Religious Department (JAINJ) detained a young couple suspected of engaging in khalwat.

The incident took place around 12.30am, involving a 26-year-old man from Perak and a 23-year-old woman from Penang. Both individuals, believed to be students at a public university, were found inside a parked car with heavily tinted windows. The engine was still running, and the air conditioning was switched on, creating a sealed and private space in the otherwise dimly lit area.

When approached by JAINJ officers, the couple claimed that their late-night meeting was purely academic. They reportedly explained that the woman had struggled to understand a topic discussed earlier in class, and the man had agreed to go over the material with her. The pair insisted that they were merely continuing their study session and pleaded for no further action to be taken.

The location of the incident had already been under the department’s radar due to multiple public complaints. Residents had reported several cars parked there late at night, often with engines idling and occupants remaining inside for extended periods. In some cases, drivers had allegedly used “vehicle breakdown” as an excuse to explain their presence.

During the operation, JAINJ officers inspected the car and took down statements from both individuals. The case is now under investigation to determine whether the situation constituted a breach of Islamic law regarding close proximity between unmarried individuals.

While the couple maintained that their intentions were purely related to classwork, the circumstances — including the late hour, the secluded location, and the tinted vehicle — have raised questions. The authorities have yet to reveal if any formal charges will be brought forward.

This incident has once again brought attention to ongoing enforcement efforts in Johor against khalwat, especially in areas known for being frequented by couples late at night. It also highlights the continuing debate over how such cases should be handled, particularly when those involved claim innocent reasons for their actions.

For now, the couple’s academic explanation remains under official scrutiny, and the case serves as another reminder that in certain contexts, even seemingly harmless situations can attract serious consequences.
