A local court has framed charges against Panjab University Professor Bharat Bhushan Goyal, who was arrested last year in connection with the killing of his wife, Seema Goyal.
Police registered the case after Seema Goyal’s body was found at the couple’s official residence on the university campus on November 4, 2021. Her hands and feet were tied with ropes, and a cloth was stuffed in her mouth. Preliminary investigation revealed that she had been strangled.
For nearly four years, police were unable to solve the case. However, their suspicion remained on Goyal.
After a lengthy investigation spanning nearly four years, including a polygraph test, Professor Goyal was arrested in December 2025. Police claimed he had fabricated a false story to mislead them.
Goyal told police he was sleeping on the upper floor of the house on the night of the incident. He claimed that when he came downstairs in the morning, he found his wife’s hands and legs tied and assumed robbers had escaped through the window after committing the crime.
However, during the investigation, police found that the window grilles had been cut from the inside, indicating that no robbers had entered from outside.
Seema Goyal was the professor’s second wife.
