KUALA LUMPUR – Datuk Mas Ermieyati Samsudin has kept her grip on the Masjid Tanah parliamentary seat in Melaka after the Elections Court made a decision to maintain the result that led to her to win the constituency in the 15th general election (GE15) last November.
Justice Datuk Abu Bakar Katar found that the petition mounted by Barisan Nasional (BN) candidate Abdul Hakim Abdul Wahid had failed to prove there were elements of undue inducement involving Mas Ermieyati.
The Bersatu women wing's vice-chairperson is therefore absolved of having engaged in corrupt practice intended to influence voters to sway the election result for the seat.
On February 7, the Melaka High Court had dismissed the preliminary objection of the election petition filed by Hakim to invalidate Mas Ermieyati's win.
Hakim had filed the petition on January 3 alleging that bribery, in the form of money and banquets, was used to woo voters in GE15.
Mas Ermieyati had won the seat for Perikatan Nasional (PN) with a majority of 4,411 votes, in a four-cornered clash against Hakim, Mutalib Uthman (Muda) and Handrawirawan Abu Bakar (Pejuang).
Mas Ermieyati is presently the Public Accounts Committee chairman in Parliament.
She is also a former deputy minister in the Prime Minister's Department in charge of Parliament and Law in the administration of the prime minister Datuk Seri Ismail Sabri Yaakob. – The Vibes, October 27, 2023
