PETALING JAYA: The Kuala Lumpur High Court has sentenced fugitive businessman Low Taek Jho and his father Larry Low Hock Peng to jail for not complying with a restraining order against them, Malaysiakini reports.
However, Jho Low and Hock Peng were not present and they were not represented by lawyers during an open-court proceeding before judge Hayatul Akmal Abdul Aziz today..
The order was issued over the duo failing to abide by the Mareva injunction obtained by 1MDB in the US$3.7837 billion lawsuit against them and four others.
Following this, both Taek Jho — better known as Jho Low — and Hock Peng can be sentenced to prison until they purge the contempt imposed on them.
According to TheEdgeMarkets, Jho Low and Hock Peng were supposed to disclose to 1MDB and Global Diversified Investment Company where the duo and their assets were located within 14 days of the March 15 order. They had not done so.
Following this, 1MDB and the subsidiary followed up with the contempt proceeding.
Both Jho Low and Hock Peng are not in Malaysia.
