RANAU: Efforts to improve road safety and ensure compliance among commercial vehicle operators were intensified on June 19 through a joint enforcement operation conducted along one of Ranau’s key transport routes.
The integrated operation, known as the Commercial Vehicle Enforcement Operation, was carried out at KM20, Jalan Ranau–Telupid in Nalapak by the Traffic Investigation and Enforcement Division (BSPT) of the Ranau District Police Headquarters (IPD Ranau) in collaboration with the Road Transport Department (JPJ) Ranau Branch and the Sabah Commercial Vehicle Licensing Board (LPKP).
The operation formed part of ongoing efforts by enforcement agencies to monitor commercial vehicle activities, ensure adherence to road transport regulations and improve overall road safety for all users.
According to the authorities, the operation focused on inspecting commercial vehicles, verifying licensing requirements and ensuring compliance with regulations governing the transportation industry.
Particular attention was given to offences that could compromise road safety, including technical vehicle defects, driver non-compliance and violations of licensing conditions imposed by the Sabah Commercial Vehicle Licensing Board.
The operation also sought to address the persistent issue of overloaded vehicles, which not only pose a danger to motorists but can also contribute to accelerated deterioration of road infrastructure.
Heavy and improperly loaded vehicles have long been recognised as a factor that increases the risk of road accidents, vehicle instability and excessive wear on public roads.
By conducting regular enforcement activities, authorities hope to encourage greater compliance and foster a stronger culture of safety among commercial transport operators.
The operation proceeded smoothly without any untoward incidents, reflecting the close cooperation between the participating enforcement agencies.
During the course of inspections, immediate enforcement action was taken against drivers and company owners found to be in violation of relevant laws and regulations.
A total of 17 summonses and two notices were issued for various offences. Among the violations detected were overloading and unsafe cargo transportation, failure to possess a valid Goods Driving Licence (GDL), lack of valid insurance coverage, expired road tax, and several other traffic-related offences.
Authorities stressed that enforcement operations of this nature are not intended solely to penalise offenders but also to educate road users and commercial vehicle operators on the importance of complying with transport regulations.
Road safety remains a shared responsibility involving enforcement agencies, transport operators and individual drivers.
Ensuring that commercial vehicles are roadworthy, properly licensed and operated in accordance with regulations not only protects the drivers themselves but also safeguards other road users.
As commercial vehicles continue to play a vital role in supporting economic activities throughout Sabah, consistent enforcement and compliance remain essential in reducing accidents, protecting public infrastructure and ensuring safer journeys for all who travel the state’s roads.
