The Ministry of Housing and Local Government (KPKT) is ramping up efforts to combat roadside littering by instructing local authorities (PBT) to take immediate action against individuals who throw trash out of their vehicles. Minister Nga Kor Ming announced this directive in response to viral images depicting heaps of rubbish strewn along roadsides, necessitating extensive cleanup efforts by local authority workers.
Expressing concern over the alarming spread of roadside litter, Minister Nga emphasized the need for collective responsibility in maintaining public cleanliness. "It is incumbent upon all of us, as responsible citizens, to uphold cleanliness in public spaces. We cannot simply delegate this responsibility to municipal workers," he stressed.
Addressing the sweltering weather conditions exacerbating the challenges faced by cleanup crews, Nga urged compassion towards these frontline workers. "Our dedicated workers toil tirelessly in the blistering heat to keep our surroundings clean. It is our duty to support them by disposing of waste properly," he urged during his participation in the festive Meriah Beraya event at a local shopping center.
Emphasizing the importance of proper waste disposal practices, Nga urged individuals to refrain from littering and utilize designated bins. "If you indulge in snacks or meals while driving, kindly store the packaging in your vehicle until you can dispose of it responsibly. Dumping trash on roadsides is not only irresponsible but also disrespectful to our environment and community," he admonished.
In a proactive measure to ensure cleanliness during the upcoming Aidilfitri festivities, Nga revealed that KPKT has mobilized its resources for extensive cleanup operations. Viral social media posts showcasing litter, including food and beverage packaging, along routes from Kuala Lipis, Pahang, to Gua Musang, Kelantan, have underscored the urgency of these efforts.
In addition to enforcement measures, Nga emphasized the importance of education and community engagement in fostering a culture of environmental stewardship. "Beyond punitive measures, we must educate the public about the importance of preserving our environment. Through collective effort and awareness, we can cultivate a cleaner, more sustainable future," he remarked.
Earlier in the day, Nga exemplified the spirit of giving by distributing Aidilfitri donation vouchers totaling RM22,500 to 150 families in the Kepayang state constituency. This gesture underscored the ministry's commitment to fostering social cohesion and supporting communities during festive occasions.
As the nation prepares to celebrate Aidilfitri, the Ministry of Housing and Local Government's proactive measures against roadside littering serve as a timely reminder of the importance of individual accountability and community solidarity in preserving the cleanliness of our shared spaces. By working together, Malaysians can pave the way for a cleaner, greener future for generations to come.
