A notorious criminal with a long history of violent offences was arrested after a brief exchange of fire with the police in south-east Delhi’s Pul Prahladpur area on Tuesday night, the police said.

The accused, Sunil, alias Shetty, alias Deva (50), an active “bad character” of the Govindpuri police station, was apprehended near a DDA park adjacent to Kaya Maya Hospital at 10 pm on May 5.

A team from the Pul Prahladpur police station acted on a tip-off regarding Sunil’s movement in the area. Under the supervision of ACP Badarpur Akash Agrawal and led by the SHO of Pul Prahladpur, the team laid a trap to nab him. The police said Sunil, who was wanted in a robbery and attempt to culpable homicide case registered at the Pul Prahladpur police station, allegedly opened fire on the police team when confronted.

In retaliatory firing, a bullet struck his left leg, following which he was overpowered and taken into custody.
