PAPAR: Residents of Kampung Beringgis, Kawang, expressed relief after the Wildlife Department captured a nine-foot female crocodile on Tuesday.
A resident, Abdul Rahman, said the crocodile was caught after taking a bait placed on a fishing line set up by the Department.
“I have put up warning signs about the presence of crocodiles along the roadside and residents have been urged not to enter the mangrove forest to look for clams or crabs,” he told Daily Express.
However, Abdul said the residents remained concerned as there are believed to be more crocodiles in the river, including some reportedly measuring more than 20 feet long.
“Only one crocodile has been caught. There are still others, including smaller ones, while the larger crocodile that was seen previously has yet to be captured,” he said.
He said crocodiles had frequently entered nearby ponds despite the areas being fenced, raising concerns among residents as some of the ponds are located close to houses.
Abdul claimed that several livestock had been attacked and eaten by crocodiles since they began appearing in the area.
“What worries us most is the safety of the residents. We cannot allow this situation to continue,” he said.
He said he contacted the Department about the matter, after which officers came to set up fishing lines, leading to the capture of the crocodile.
According to Abdul, crocodiles have been frequently sighted in the area since May this year.
“I do not want to hear of another resident being attacked by a crocodile. I urge everyone to stay away from the river, especially those who often go there to collect clams,” he said.
He also urged parents to ensure their children do not carry out activities near the river.
