The investiture ceremony appointing Johor Crown Prince, Tunku Ismail Ibni Sultan Ibrahim, as the Regent of Johor unfolded with grace and tradition at Istana Bukit Serene on Sunday, January 28. This significant decision stems from the anticipation of Johor Ruler Sultan Ibrahim Ibni Almarhum Sultan Iskandar's impending ascent to the federal throne as the 17th Yang di-Pertuan Agong, set to occur on Wednesday, January 31.
According to the provisions outlined in the Johor State Constitution of 1895, this appointment was made under Clause 9(1)(d) and (3), with the advice of the esteemed Royal Council. The validity of Tunku Ismail's role as the Regent of Johor will persist as long as Sultan Ibrahim assumes the responsibilities associated with the Agong's position.
Consequently, the heir to the Johor throne will now be recognized as His Royal Highness Tunku Ismail, The Regent of Johor. Born on June 30, 1984, in Johor Baru, Tunku Ismail holds the distinction of being the eldest among six children of Sultan Ibrahim and Permaisuri Johor Raja Zarith Sofiah Almarhum Sultan Idris Shah.
Known for his avid interest in polo and football, Tunku Ismail has served as the president of the Johor Football Association since February 16, 2012. This isn't the first time he has taken on the role of Regent; he previously fulfilled this duty on various occasions, including the most recent instance on June 16, 2022, when Sultan Ibrahim temporarily stepped back from his royal administrative responsibilities.
Moreover, Tunku Ismail entered matrimony with Her Highness Che’ Puan Mahkota Khaleeda Johor on October 24, 2014. The couple has since been blessed with four children—two sons and two daughters, namely, Tunku Khalsom Aminah Sofiah, Tunku Iskandar Abdul Jalil Abu Bakar Ibrahim, Tunku Abu Bakar Ibrahim, and Tunku Zahrah Zarith Aziyah. As the stage is set for Sultan Ibrahim's elevation to the throne on January 31, marking his five-year reign as the 17th King of Malaysia, the appointment of Tunku Ismail as the Regent adds a layer of continuity and stability to the Johor monarchy.
