A man in China suffered a devastating loss when his luxury electric vehicle (EV) was completely destroyed in a fire, allegedly caused by a 10-year-old child setting off fireworks nearby.

The incident took place on January 30 in Shandong, where the owner had parked his BYD Fangchengbao Leopard 8, a high-end EV valued at approximately RMB 400,000 (RM240,000), by the roadside. When he returned, he was met with a shocking sight—a crowd gathered around the charred remains of his vehicle.

“I had just finished a drink and was heading home. Seeing the crowd, I wondered what had caught their attention. As I got closer, I realized my car was gone—only ashes remained,” he recounted to local media.

Authorities later determined that the fire started when the child ignited fireworks near a trash bin beside the car. The flames spread rapidly, engulfing the vehicle before anything could be done to stop it. The owner not only lost his car but also all important documents inside, leaving him in an even more difficult situation.

To his dismay, his insurance provider informed him that he was not eligible for compensation, as the incident was not classified as a spontaneous vehicle fire. With no financial assistance from insurance, he sought legal advice and is now working with the police to obtain an official investigation report for further negotiations.

Hoping to resolve the matter, the car owner met with the child’s parents on February 8. They admitted their child’s involvement but expressed their financial inability to compensate for the damages. With no clear resolution in sight, the owner is now considering whether to take legal action.

The case highlights concerns over the dangers of fireworks and the accountability of minors in such incidents. It also raises questions about insurance policies and their limitations in covering unforeseen accidents. As the owner contemplates his next steps, his only hope is to find a way to recover from the unfortunate incident, either through legal means or a potential settlement.
