Cruise ship hantavirus cases rise to 11 as Spanish passenger falls ill

  • A Spanish passenger, evacuated from a cruise ship at the centre of a hantavirus outbreak, has tested positive for the virus.
  • The World Health Organization (WHO) has confirmed 11 cases of hantavirus, all linked to the MV Hondius cruise ship.
  • Among the confirmed cases, three individuals, who were passengers or crew from the MV Hondius, have died.
  • Nine of the 11 confirmed cases have been identified as the Andes virus.
  • The infected Spanish passenger was quarantined in a military hospital in Madrid, where 13 other Spanish nationals evacuated from the ship tested negative.
