The Congress of Union of Employees in the Public and Civil Services (Cuepacs) has called on the Ministry of Health to take immediate action in resolving the issue of low-quality fabric used for healthcare workers’ uniforms. This concern has been raised multiple times, and Cuepacs believes that the issue should have been resolved by now.
Datuk Adnan Mat, the president of Cuepacs, expressed disappointment that the problem persists, especially when Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim has placed significant emphasis on improving the welfare of public servants. Adnan remarked, “The fabric supplied for healthcare uniforms does not meet the required standards. We are disappointed to see this happening at a time when the government is focusing on enhancing the well-being of civil servants.”
Adnan further explained that Cuepacs had received numerous complaints regarding the quality of the uniforms. The main issue is that the fabric is not a true white, and even when it is white, it is often too thin and translucent. Additionally, the fabric is stiff and uncomfortable, making it unsuitable for use in uniforms, which should be durable and comfortable for workers carrying out their daily tasks. “This matter needs urgent attention and re-evaluation,” he emphasized.
Adnan’s comments came during the Terengganu Education Administrative Assistants Professionalism Enhancement Programme 2024, held at Sekolah Menengah Kebangsaan (SMK) Sultan Sulaiman on Wednesday, October 23. The event served as a platform for raising concerns about the ongoing issues faced by civil servants, particularly healthcare workers who rely on proper uniforms to perform their duties effectively.
The issue of uniform quality was also raised by Bagan MP Lim Guan Eng during a parliamentary debate on Wednesday. Lim reiterated concerns previously highlighted by Senator Dr. RA Lingeshwaran, who had urged the Ministry of Health to reveal the name of the fabric supplier responsible for the substandard uniforms. Dr. Lingeshwaran also questioned what steps the ministry had taken to address this issue and ensure that public servants receive uniforms of the appropriate quality.
In addition to the concerns about healthcare workers’ uniforms, Adnan also brought attention to the need for the government to expedite the upgrade of the service scheme for approximately 300,000 administrative assistants. According to Adnan, these employees have been left out of the Public Service Remuneration System (SSPA), despite their critical role in the public sector.
Cuepacs has submitted a memorandum to Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim, requesting a review of the service scheme for administrative assistants. Adnan expressed hope that the government would provide a positive response soon, as the issue had already been discussed with the Public Service Department (PSD).
Cuepacs remains committed to advocating for the rights and welfare of public servants, and it hopes that both the uniform quality issue and the administrative assistants’ service scheme will be addressed promptly to ensure that civil servants receive the support they need to perform their roles effectively.
