Girls is back!
Fans of Lena Dunham’s beloved New York City-based series were surprised Tuesday when HBO Max announced that new episodes of the series are in the works after the series ended in 2017.
The five-episode, limited run revival will feature Dunham, the show’s creator and star, alongside co-stars Allison Williams, Jemima Kirke, Zosia Mamet and Andrew Rannells.
Not mentioned in the returning cast so far is Adam Driver, who played Dunham’s character on-and-off boyfriend. Dunham’s bombshell memoir released earlier this year revealed that tensions on the set of the 2010s show’s six seasons culminated in the Marriage Story actor throwing a chair at a wall.
Dunham said in a post shared on her Substack: “There was a long period in which it was impossible to imagine reconvening Girls- it felt so recent and so big, like a glacier we were sailing away from.
“Then, I turned forty. I thought about the distance I felt- having not yet had a child, having come ‘later’ to marriage, having gone very fast in certain ways and still having some challenges with the washing machine- from the woman I thought I’d be and so many women I know,” she said.
The writer continued, “Maybe there was once a part of me that wanted to outrun Hannah and her ladies. Seeing the love you’ve so generously shared for it helped to turned me around.”
Production on the new episodes is scheduled to begin in 2027. Dunham will executive produce the revival with director Judd Apatow, who was also an EP on the original series.
Hailed as the Sex and the City of its time, Girls followed Dunham’s character Hannah Horvath, a struggling young writer, and her friends as they navigated post-college life in New York. The show ended with Horvath moving out of the city and adjusting to new motherhood with the support of her best friend Marnie Michaels, played by Williams.
Dunham admitted earlier this year that she had an idea in mind for what the follow-up to Girls would look like.
“I have to say, I’ve got a little plot line in my brain. I do,” she said in a SiriusXM radio interview in April. “It’s impossible not to think about where they are now.”
She said of her castmates, who remain her close friends, “I just see them, and also, those are my muses. So, I think it’s an obvious thing.”
“We don’t want to come back to the party too early. We want to be appropriately missed,” she added.
