Kota Kinabalu: The process of documenting intangible cultural heritage is a crucial step for Sabah to preserve the invaluable cultures and tradition of indigenous peoples from the impact of globalisation, said Deputy Chief Minister I Datuk Seri Dr Jeffrey Kitingan.

He said the erosion of cultural identity and cultural heritage is a real concern due the effects of globalisation and modernisation which have become part and parcel of everyday life and provided alternative approaches.

Speaking at the Kaamatan Conference Session 1 Intangible Cultural Heritage: Towards Unesco recognition, Jeffrey stressed that cultural heritage of indigenous communities faces the threat of extinction if nothing is done to identify, document, preserve and promote Sabah’s rich ethnic traditions.
