The Customs Department has recently issued a strong denial in response to allegations circulating on social media, claiming that its director-general, Datuk Anis Rizana Mohd Zainudin, misused government funds for a personal vacation in Bangkok, Thailand. These claims suggest that she traveled to Bangkok with her family, flying business class, allegedly on the government’s dime.

In a statement released yesterday, the Customs Department labeled these accusations as both unfounded and irresponsible, noting that there is no truth to the suggestion that government funds were misappropriated. According to the department, Datuk Anis Rizana took two days of approved leave on October 30 and November 1, as authorized through the Human Resource Management Information System (HRMIS) by the Treasury’s secretary-general. This leave was granted in full accordance with standard procedures, and she adhered to all necessary protocols for government employees requesting time off.

The department clarified that while Anis Rizana traveled abroad, this was for personal reasons, not official business, and that she followed all relevant guidelines, particularly General Circular No. 3 of 2012. This regulation governs public officials' international travel for personal matters, ensuring that they meet requirements that prevent any potential misuse of government resources.

In line with these procedures, the department confirmed that Datuk Anis Rizana covered all personal expenses related to her travel, including flights, accommodation, and other associated costs. According to their statement, no government funds were used in connection with this trip to Bangkok. The Customs Department emphasized that it operates in compliance with strict rules and guidelines, underscoring that its officials are held to high standards regarding financial accountability.

In response to these unfounded allegations, the Customs Department has taken further action by filing a police report. They are urging the public to refrain from spreading baseless rumors or accusations, especially those that could harm the reputation of the department or its officials. This is not the first time that Anis Rizana has faced accusations on social media; she was previously alleged to have interfered in an investigation involving a luxury vehicle smuggling syndicate in Sarawak. However, the department denied any involvement or improper conduct on her part in that matter as well.

Despite the department’s efforts to clarify and dismiss these claims, various allegations of misconduct and abuse of power against Anis Rizana continue to surface on social media platforms. The department remains firm, however, reiterating its stance that all claims thus far lack factual basis.

The Customs Department has expressed concern over the persistence of these allegations, viewing them as attempts to mislead the public and create distrust toward the agency and its leadership. In its statement, the department emphasized its commitment to transparency, accountability, and adherence to the law.
