TUMPAT – The Customs Department is ready to implement the goods and services tax (GST) if the government intends to introduce it, said Customs Director-General Datuk Zazuli Johan.
Zazuli said, however, there has been no such indication yet.
“The implementation of GST would depend on the government, but we are always ready for any eventuality if the government says ok.
“Whatever decision will depend on the government, including the percentage to be imposed,” he told reporters in Pengkalan Kubor, here today.
Speaking of smuggling activities during floods, especially along the Malaysia-Thailand border, Zazuli admitted that such incidents do take place, but the department has beefed up enforcement.
“Meanwhile, the Kelantan Customs Department managed to collect RM204.91 million in tax for the year 2022, compared with RM91.93 million in 2021.
“It is a major achievement that we can be proud of since it will increase the country’s revenue,” he said. – Bernama, January 5, 2023
