
Kota Kinabalu: New brands of contraband cigarettes worth almost RM2 million in taxes meant for the local market were seized by State Customs after intercepting a truck on the Penampang – Papar Pan Borneo Highway last Saturday.
Customs personnel uncovered boxes of Platinum, Premium Menthols and Orchids in the 3.40 pm raid.
Acting Sabah Customs Deputy Director Cheong Yu Min said the contraband totalled 100,500 boxes worth at least RM139,100 that could have fetched RM1,860,272 in taxes.
“Two local men aged 26 and 62-years-old were detained for further questioning. A three-tonne bonded truck worth RM25,000 was also seized,” he told a press conference today.
