Kota Kinabalu: The Royal Malaysian Customs seized 9,000 cases of suspected contraband beer worth RM1.56 million at Sabah Ports, Sepanggar, near here, last Friday.

Sabah Customs Deputy Director Julaiman Soimin said their scanners managed to sniff the stacks of Cool and Tiger brews in three containers.

"We believe the drinks were meant for the local market.

"The culprits had attempted to avoid RM910,000 in taxes. Investigations continue," he told a press conference.
