KUALA LUMPUR – Police have arrested three individuals, including two women, in connection with the murder of a 20-year-old university student whose body was discovered in her residence in Cyberjaya earlier this week.
The suspects, aged between 19 and 20, were apprehended by a joint team from Bukit Aman, the Selangor police headquarters and the Sepang district police.
The arrests were carried out in separate operations around Johor Bahru and Gemencheh, Negeri Sembilan, between 9am on Thursday and 2am on Friday.
Sepang district police chief Assistant Commissioner Norhizam Bahaman confirmed that the trio were detained within 48 hours of the initial police report being lodged.
“All suspects will be remanded to assist with the investigation,” he said in a statement on Friday.
He added that the case is being investigated under Section 302 of the Penal Code for murder.
“We urge the public not to speculate or spread unverified information that could disrupt the investigation,” Norhizam said.
The case came to light following a report received at 10.28am on Tuesday, when the victim’s body was found in her student accommodation. Initial checks revealed no signs of forced entry into the unit.
However, the victim sustained severe head injuries. Her body was sent to the Serdang Hospital forensic unit, where a post-mortem concluded that the cause of death was blunt force trauma to the head. There were no signs of sexual assault.
The student, originally from Kuching, Sarawak, had been alone in the residence as her housemates had returned home for the holidays.
She had reportedly remained behind to prepare for an upcoming examination.
Several items, including her ATM card, laptop, mobile phone and cash, were missing from the scene.
Her death has prompted criticism from family members over the safety standards at the university-managed accommodation.
Speaking to Scoop at the Shamshan Bhoomi Hall (Loke Yew Crematorium) yesterday, the victim’s uncle, Datuk Rajpal Singh, voiced his dismay.
“We are deeply saddened by what happened, and we’re baffled that this occurred in university-managed accommodation. A life is now lost,” he said.
Rajpal said he was shocked to learn that the premises lacked even basic safety features such as closed-circuit television (CCTV).
“We believe the university management must improve security to safeguard students’ wellbeing,” he said. “As for what happened to Maniisha, we will let the police investigate. I believe the Royal Malaysian Police (PDRM) will act according to the law and deliver justice for Maniisha.”
He called on the police to pursue a thorough investigation: “We urge the police to resolve this swiftly and not take shortcuts. We want them to do what’s necessary to ensure justice is served.” - June 27, 2025
