Former finance minister Daim Zainuddin's wife, Naimah Khalid, responded to remarks made by Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) chief Azam Baki regarding the postponement of the prosecution against Daim. Azam had mentioned that the delay was due to Daim's ongoing treatment at a private hospital.
Azam stated that the agency had received approval from the Attorney-General's Chambers to bring Daim to court but did not specify the charges involved. Azam explained that MACC was unable to determine the reason for Daim's hospital admission, as the treating doctor did not disclose the details. Naimah expressed surprise, stating that neither she nor their legal counsel were informed about the intention to press charges against Daim.
She refuted Azam's insinuation that Daim was using hospitalization as a means to evade prosecution, describing it as false and mischievous. Naimah also defended the credibility of the hospital's doctors against Azam's disparaging remarks. Naimah clarified that Daim was currently undergoing treatment and, with the consent of the hospital and medical team, he was willing to face the charges even while hospitalized. She left the decision regarding the location of the trial to Azam and MACC.
Naimah emphasized that Daim was prepared to face any charge and defend himself vigorously anywhere, within the bounds of the law. In a separate development, Naimah herself was charged at the Kuala Lumpur sessions court for failing to comply with an MACC notice demanding the declaration of assets, including companies, plots of land, and vehicles. Earlier this month, MACC summoned Naimah and her sons, Amir and Amin, to gather information concerning the family's assets.
MACC had issued a notice to Daim on June 7, 2023, under Section 36(1)(a) of the MACC Act 2009. Family members received notices under Section 36(1)(b) of the same Act. MACC's investigation into Daim began in February 2023 following information from the Pandora Papers leak, which linked several prominent Malaysians to offshore tax havens. Overall, the situation involves the postponement of Daim Zainuddin's prosecution due to his ongoing hospital treatment.
His wife, Naimah Khalid, strongly responded to Azam Baki's remarks regarding Daim's alleged evasion of charges, defending the hospital and expressing Daim's willingness to face the charges even while hospitalized. Naimah herself has been charged separately for failing to comply with an MACC notice. The case arises from MACC's investigation into offshore tax havens based on information from the Pandora Papers leak.
