Tun Daim Zainuddin, one of Malaysia's most influential figures in finance and a close ally of former Prime Minister Tun Dr. Mahathir Mohamad, saw his final days clouded by controversy and allegations. Mahathir, heartbroken by Daim’s passing, expressed sorrow over the pressures his friend endured in the twilight of his life, which he believes accelerated Daim’s decline in health.

Mahathir shared his sentiments in an interview with Astro Awani, reflecting on the difficult final years Daim faced. He emphasized that Daim had not sought power or political recognition. Rather, he had reluctantly joined Mahathir’s Cabinet as finance minister upon request, offering his expertise and resources to the government during two critical periods. Daim’s two tenures, from 1984 to 1991 and later from 1999 to 2001, left a lasting impact on Malaysia's economic landscape, with the latter stint focused on aiding Malaysia’s recovery from the Asian Financial Crisis.

However, Daim’s later years were marked by investigations and legal troubles that cast a shadow over his legacy. The Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) launched a probe into his financial affairs, particularly after Daim’s name surfaced in the Pandora Papers, which implicated several high-profile figures in offshore wealth holdings. Subsequently, Daim and his wife faced charges related to non-compliance with asset declaration notices from the MACC. Mahathir, in his reflections, insisted that these accusations were unjust, attributing them to personal vendettas rather than genuine misconduct. “He faced criticism for no reason,” Mahathir said, lamenting the loss of peace in Daim’s last years. “It was vengeance, pure and simple.”

This chapter, Mahathir believes, was a tragic consequence of a life lived under public scrutiny, where even well-intentioned leaders face relentless challenges. Mahathir urged Malaysians to remember Daim for his contributions rather than the controversies surrounding his wealth, asserting that Daim’s financial success was not achieved dishonestly. In Mahathir's view, Daim’s achievements for the nation far outweighed any personal gain, and the accusations only served to rob him of peace in his final days.

Daim, who was once a key figure in UMNO and served as the party’s treasurer-general, had been removed from the party in 2018 after openly supporting Pakatan Harapan, led by Mahathir. This marked a significant shift in his political affiliations, but one Mahathir felt was consistent with Daim’s commitment to the nation. Daim’s role on the Council of Eminent Persons further demonstrated his loyalty to Malaysia’s future, advising the PH government during its early days in office.

In Daim’s passing, Mahathir sees a poignant reflection on loyalty, sacrifice, and the sometimes in the unforgiving nature of public life. For Mahathir, Daim’s story is one of a man who, despite his dedication to Malaysia, was deprived of peace by the weight of unproven allegations, a karmic struggle that, in Mahathir’s view, leaves behind a legacy complicated by political vendettas. "Dear God, ensure justice for Daim," Mahathir prayed and said that both will reunite someday, mourning not just a friend but a devoted servant of the country who, despite his contributions, spent his final days embroiled in turmoil.
