KUALA LUMPUR — Negeri Sembilan DAP is firmly behind Datuk Seri Aminuddin Harun as Menteri. Besar, and will reject any attempt to form a new state government outside the electoral framework.

DAP secretary-general Anthony Loke, who is also Chennah assemblyman in the state, said all the party’s 11 assemblymen in the state agree that Aminuddin’s administration must be allowed to continue functioning as a minority government.

Any issues regarding his support must be properly tested in the state assembly, Loke said at a press conference together with Aminuddin in Seremban today.

“There is no question of supporting any backdoor government. The mandate given by the people in the 2023 state election must be respected,” said Loke.

He said the current Negeri Sembilan administration was formed based on a clear electoral mandate and cooperation between Pakatan Harapan (PH) and Barisan Nasional (BN) in the 2023 state election.

“Any change of government must be done through the proper democratic process in the legislative assembly. We will not support any attempt to undermine the mandate of the people,” he added.

In the 36-seat assembly, PH has 17 seats, Umno-BN has 14, and the opposition Perikatan Nasional (PN) holds five.

After Umno’s shock announcement that its 14 assemblymen had withdrawn their support for Amiruddin earlier today, Negeri Sembilan PN said it was ready to cooperate with the state BN.

If this materialises, BN and PN would collectively command 19 seats, enough to form a simple majority in the legislative assembly and potentially unseat the PH-led government.

The current crisis stems from an attempt by Negeri Sembilan’s four territorial chieftains (Undang Berempat) who have the power to elect the head of state, the Yang di-Pertuan Besar.

The four chieftains recently declared the removal of Tuanku Muhriz as the Yang di-Pertuan Besar.

Aminuddin, however, said the state government regarded the declaration as illegal, as one of the chiefs, Datuk Mubarak Dohak had since May last year ceased to be the Undang Luak of Sungai Ujong and as such had no authority.

Loke said that while DAP respected Negeri Sembilan’s unique constitutional monarchy that included the Undang Berempat, any move to remove Tuanku Muhriz must follow the state constitution.

Tuanku Muhriz, meanwhile, has told Aminuddin to remain as Menteri Besar until there is clarity on his support in the legislative assembly. - April 27, 2026
