The leadership of the Democratic Action Party (DAP) has vehemently denounced the death threat directed at its vice-chairman, Theresa Kok, who also serves as the Member of Parliament (MP) for Seputeh.
DAP Secretary-General Anthony Loke issued a statement condemning any form of violence, particularly in the context of political disagreements. "All acts of violence are unacceptable, especially in addressing differences of opinion in politics," Loke emphasized.
In his statement, shared on his Facebook page today, Loke expressed the party's unwavering support for Kok. "The entire DAP leadership stands in solidarity with her in facing this threat," he affirmed.
Loke also extended his gratitude to the police for their prompt response following the report of the threat. "I am confident that the police will investigate the case thoroughly and arrest those responsible for the crime," he added.
According to the police, Kok reported receiving an envelope in her mailbox yesterday containing two bullets and a threatening note written on a white A4-sized paper.
This incident has sparked significant concern within the political community, highlighting the dangers faced by public officials. The use of intimidation and threats of violence against politicians is a serious issue that undermines democratic principles and the safety of elected representatives.
The DAP has consistently advocated for peaceful discourse and the resolution of political differences through dialogue and democratic processes. This stance is underscored by their condemnation of the threat against Kok, which they view as an attack not only on an individual but on the democratic process itself.
The broader implications of such threats extend beyond the immediate safety of the individuals targeted. They serve to create a climate of fear and intimidation, which can stifle free speech and discourage public participation in political life. This is particularly concerning in a democratic society where diverse opinions and robust debate are essential to the functioning of government.
In response to this threat, there have been calls from various quarters for increased security measures for public officials and a more robust legal framework to address such acts of intimidation. Ensuring the safety of elected representatives is crucial for the maintenance of a healthy, functioning democracy.
The DAP leadership's prompt and strong response to the threat against Kok is a testament to their commitment to protecting their members and upholding the principles of democracy and free speech. It also serves as a reminder of the ongoing need for vigilance and collective action in the face of threats to democratic institutions and processes.
