The Democratic Action Party (DAP) remains prepared to support Barisan Nasional (BN) in the Nenggiri state by-election in Kelantan if invited, according to DAP Secretary-General Anthony Loke.
Loke emphasized DAP's commitment to cooperation within the Unity Government coalition. He stated that DAP would participate in the campaign for the coalition's candidate if their assistance is deemed necessary. "I have already said that we have a spirit of cooperation. If we are invited, we will go, but if there is no need, we will not go. There is a view that we may not be needed," Loke remarked during a press conference at the Gombak JPJ Enforcement Station, where he was overseeing a special operations monitoring program for tourist and public service vehicles.
As the current Transport Minister, Loke also extended his best wishes to Kelantan UMNO Youth Chief Mohd Azmawi Fikri Abdul Ghani, who is representing BN in the by-election scheduled for August 17.
Previously, DAP Women's Chief Teo Nie Ching had expressed that DAP would assist BN's campaign in the Nenggiri by-election if any of the Unity Government coalition parties requested their help.
However, on Monday, UMNO Supreme Council member Datuk Seri Ahmad Maslan indicated that DAP's involvement might not be crucial, noting that the majority of voters in Nenggiri are Malay. He highlighted that the constituency has only 36 Chinese voters, suggesting that the impact of DAP's campaign efforts might be limited in this particular area.
The Nenggiri by-election is a significant political event, reflecting the dynamics and strategies of the coalition parties. DAP's readiness to collaborate underscores the coalition's unified front, while the considerations about voter demographics highlight the tactical decisions involved in election campaigning.
