KUALA LUMPUR – Seri Kembangan assemblyman Wong Siew Ki has heeded the advice of the Sultan of Selangor, Sultan Sharafuddin Idris Shah, emphasising that the principles of Rukun Negara continue to guide her responsibilities as an elected representative.
In a statement on Facebook, Wong said: "I uphold the decree of His Royal Highness Sultan Sharafuddin Idris Shah Al-Haj Ibni Almarhum Sultan Salahuddin Abdul Aziz Shah Al-Haj. As a representative, the principles of Rukun Negara are always my guide, inspiration, and fundamental basis in carrying out my duties and serving all citizens.
"I highly respect and consistently follow these principles in all my actions to prioritise the interests of the people of Selangor and Malaysia. Long live the King."
Earlier today, former Selangor DAP exco Ronnie Liu Tian Khiew also demonstrated his respect for the Sultan’s counsel by visiting the Rukun Negara Monument at Dataran Selangor in the morning.
However, in the Facebook post, Wong did not indicate whether she would follow suit in visiting the site as suggested by the Sultan.
Sultan Sharafuddin had previously stressed the importance for elected representatives and the public to visit the monument at least twice a month to reflect on the nation’s core ideology. He specifically advised Liu and Wong to attend weekly as a mark of respect for the royal institution and to embrace values of courtesy and moral integrity.
The recent controversy involving Liu and Wong centres on their opposition to the Sultan’s firm position on pig farming in the state.
Wong faced public criticism after suggesting the adoption of modern, closed-system pig farming during a state assembly debate, following the Sultan’s decree against such farms in Selangor. She argued her proposal in the context of equal rights under Article 8(2) of the Federal Constitution, asserting that pig farming should be considered fairly as part of the state’s agricultural development.
Meanwhile, Liu proposed pursuing a judicial review against the Sultan’s degree to ban on pig farming. His stance was widely perceived as a direct challenge to royal authority.
The Sultan has consistently opposed pig farming in Selangor, citing environmental concerns, limited land availability, and the welfare of the public.
Funded personally by Sultan Sharafuddin, the Rukun Negara Monument, complete with visitor benches and positioned next to the state flagpole, serves as a reminder of national unity following the deadly May 13, 1969 riots.
Liu acknowledged that the Sultan’s message went beyond a physical visit. It was a reminder for leaders to uphold the Constitution, respect the rule of law, safeguard the Malay Rulers’ institutions, and cherish fellow citizens.
"I see this visit not only as following Tuanku’s advice, but also as a soul-refreshing reminder for Malaysians. Rukun Negara is the foundation of our country, and we must hold firmly to its principles," Liu told Scoop.
He also encouraged other state leaders to follow suit, expressing gratitude to Sultan Sharafuddin for the enduring gift of the Rukun Negara Monument.
"We often forget, and I am thankful Tuanku has reminded us of how Rukun Negara guides and unites us. Long live the King!"
The monument, installed by the Selangor Public Works Department (JKR), commemorates the birth of Rukun Negara, conceived by the National Operations Council following the 1969 racial riots to foster harmony among Malaysia’s diverse communities.
Sultan Sharafuddin hoped visitors, particularly younger Malaysians, would reflect on the principles inscribed on the plaque.
"I hope members of the public who visit Dataran Selangor, especially the younger generation, will read and appreciate these fundamental principles of Rukun Negara, which form the core foundation of unity among Malaysians," his Majesty said.
He also called on all Selangor state representatives to visit the site twice a month to deepen their understanding of the national ideology, urging Wong and Liu to make regular visits to appreciate the values of the monarchy and moral integrity. – May 20, 2026
