PETALING JAYA: DAP has set another target for reforms to take place, this time in October when Parliament convenes, according to party secretary-general Anthony Loke Siew Fook.
Loke said DAP would continue to push for the implementation of its reform agenda.
“In this regard, the CEC takes the position that two important reform agendas involving amendments to the Federal Constitution, namely the separation of powers between the Attorney General and the Public Prosecutor, and the setting of a term limit for the office of Prime Minister, should be debated and decided in Parliament at the coming sitting in October,” he said in a statement today (Sept 8).
The DAP Central Executive Committee (CEC) held its first meeting since the party’s National Congress on Aug 16 yesterday (Sept 7).
The meeting also discussed the congress mandate for DAP to remain in the Madani Government until the end of the current parliamentary term.
Loke said the CEC “respects the decision that has been made by the delegates” and was determined to carry out the mandate responsibly.
The CEC also resolved to ask the Penang state government, led by Chief Minister Chow Kon Yeow, to enact a Constituency Development Fund law.
Loke said this was to “guarantee fair and equal treatment” for all Penang assemblymen, regardless of the political party they represent, so that constituency development allocations could be provided equally through legislation.
“The CEC believes that the same principle should be extended to the Federal level as well as implemented by all state governments throughout the country.
“Constituency development allocations should be provided equally without taking into account the political background of the elected representatives,” he said.
The meeting also discussed preparations for the Melaka and Sarawak state elections.
Loke said DAP would make the necessary preparations to defend all the seats it currently holds, while identifying other seats with potential to be contested.
On March 2, the proposed constitutional amendment to limit a prime minister’s tenure to 10 years failed to secure the required two-thirds majority in the Dewan Rakyat, with 146 MPs voting in favour, two short of the 148 votes needed.
The Bill was subsequently set to be re-tabled, while the proposed separation of the Attorney General and Public Prosecutor roles was referred to a Parliamentary Special Select Committee for further scrutiny.
The next Dewan Rakyat sitting is scheduled to begin on October 5.
