TAWAU: DAP Tawau will raise the Tanjung Market issue to both the Federal and Sabah Ministry of Housing and Local Government (KPKT).
DAP Sabah State Committee Chief Yap Wui Lip and DAPSY Tawau Chief Thien Ee Hang, in a joint statement, said they would monitor the situation closely.
Expressing extreme concerns over the conditions of the market, they said:
“We have contacted the Tawau Municipal Council (MPT) and it has updated us on the precautionary measures taken.
“MPT said they have installed additional metal poles to support the structure and also shifted away hawkers located near to the broken pole.
“They have also requested assistance from the Sabah Works Department (JKR) to investigate thoroughly... The Works Department said the structure is not endangering and the market is safe to operate,” they said.
According to Yap and Thien, MPT has also informed them that the repair would cost approximately RM700,000 and they would want to ensure that the repair would resolve the issue once and for all.
“Therefore, we will roll out a full and detailed investigation before the structure is repaired.”
The investigation will include the safety of the building structure, the supply of electricity and water towards the market and other matters.
“We will also raise these matters to Federal Minister Nga Kor Ming and Sabah Minister Datuk Seri Masidi Manjun for further actions to resolve the issue to safeguard the interest of the people of Tawau,” they added.
They said DAP Tawau would continue to prioritise the interest of the people.
“We will continue to serve the people and the public can contact us anytime for livelihood complaints in Tawau.”
