DAP chairman Lim Guan Eng has made it clear that his political career is in the hands of party members, not external figures like Umno president Datuk Seri Ahmad Zahid Hamidi.

Speaking at the DAP National Veterans Club dinner, Lim reaffirmed that his party has never been dictated to by Umno and will not allow it now, even as part of the government. His remarks were a direct response to Zahid’s recent statement suggesting that Lim’s era in politics had come to an end and that he should step aside for fresh leadership.

“Whether my time is up or not will be decided by DAP members, not by the Umno president,” Lim said, as reported by Malaysiakini. “DAP was never controlled by Umno when we were in the opposition, and we won’t be controlled now that we are in government.”

Zahid’s comments followed Lim’s criticism of Umno’s plan to hold a joint rally with PAS in support of imprisoned former prime minister Datuk Seri Najib Razak. This move sparked backlash from DAP leaders, who saw it as an attempt to revive ties with PAS despite their past conflicts.

During his speech, Lim also acknowledged the contributions of DAP veterans, emphasizing their continued importance in shaping the party’s direction, even if they are no longer active in frontline politics.

“You can still play a crucial role by being the party’s conscience and a bridge for public opinion on government policies,” he said. He expressed gratitude to veteran members for their unwavering commitment to the party, saying that their dedication has kept the hope of a better Malaysia alive.

Meanwhile, the upcoming DAP party elections will see changes in leadership, as three senior members—M Kulasegaran, Tan Kok Wai, and Fong Kui Lun—have announced they will not seek positions in the party’s Central Executive Committee.

Lim’s firm stance signals that DAP is determined to maintain its independence and internal democracy, resisting any external influence on its leadership decisions.
