Malaysia’s push to become an AI nation by 2030 hinges on digitising government data, with a new policy and expanded MyGDX platform to strengthen governance.

KUALA LUMPUR: Digital Minister Gobind Singh Deo has identified data availability and digitisation as the core foundations for Malaysia’s ambition to become an artificial intelligence nation by 2030.

He stated that the country’s ability to develop a robust AI ecosystem is directly dependent on how comprehensively government data is managed and utilised in digital form.

Gobind made these remarks at the launch of the Public Sector Data Digitisation Policy and the expansion of the Public Sector Data Sharing Platform (MyGDX).

The newly launched policy is designed to ensure data across all ministries, departments, and agencies is digitised for use in new technology development.

In tandem with this policy, the government is broadening the use of the MyGDX platform to enable more comprehensive and secure public sector data-sharing.

“We need to look at processes that allow data to be stored and shared securely, which is why we have the MyGDX platform,” Gobind said.

He highlighted that the Data Sharing Act provides the necessary legal framework to facilitate this digitisation and sharing of data.

The initial phase involves government agencies, with cooperation from state governments also being sought.

Discussions are concurrently underway to identify which types of data are suitable to be opened up to the private sector.

Gobind confirmed that these discussions are ongoing to establish priorities and determine appropriate data categories for private sector sharing.

The security of the MyGDX platform is being prioritised, with standards set by the National Digital Department.

The data digitisation policy will apply universally across all ministries, departments, and government agencies.

This widespread application is a key part of national efforts to strengthen data-driven governance.
