A 28-year-old woman has been remanded for five days after allegedly attacking her 71-year-old aunt with a golf club during an attempted robbery in Batu Pahat.

PETALING JAYA: A 28-year-old woman has been arrested after allegedly attacking her 71-year-old aunt with a golf club during a robbery attempt at a house near Parit Raja, Batu Pahat, yesterday.

Police believe the suspect may have been driven by financial difficulties and debts she needed to settle.

According to a police report, the incident occurred at about 3.10pm while the victim, a Datin, was alone at home as her son was away attending to other matters.

The suspect allegedly entered the house and struck the victim on the head and both wrists with a golf club belonging to the victim’s late husband.

The victim sustained serious injuries but managed to scream for help, alerting a neighbour and prompting the suspect to flee with the golf club.

The neighbour rushed to the house and found the victim covered in blood before contacting the police.

Acting on the report, a team from the Batu Pahat District Police Criminal Investigation Department tracked down and detained the suspect at a house near Parit Raja.

Police also seized the golf club believed to have been used in the attack.

The victim was taken to Hospital Sultanah Nora Ismail (HSNI), where she was warded for specialist examination after sustaining injuries to her head, face, shoulder and wrists.

The suspect was brought before the Batu Pahat Magistrate’s Court this morning for a remand application.

Magistrate Aimi Nawwar Mohamad Othman ordered the suspect to be remanded for five days from today to facilitate investigations under Section 394 of the Penal Code, relating to voluntarily causing hurt in committing or attempting to commit robbery.

Batu Pahat district police chief Assistant Commissioner Shahrulanuar Mushaddat Abdullah Sani, when contacted by a Malay daily, confirmed the incident and said investigations were ongoing.
