KENINGAU: The inaugural Datuk Azman Hj Ruslan Cup (DAR Cup) is providing a major grassroots football platform for young players in Keningau, with 35 teams and about 350 players taking part in the tournament at the Kampung Baginda field on Saturday.
Organised by Baginda Village FC, the tournament features eight licensed referees from the Football Association of Malaysia (FAM), adding a competitive and structured dimension to the grassroots event.
The tournament was officially launched by PGRS Keningau chief Datuk Azman Haji Ruslan, who attended at the invitation of the organising club.
The participation of such a large number of teams highlights the continued interest in football among youths in the district and provides players with an opportunity to test themselves in a competitive environment.
For the organisers, the DAR Cup is not only about determining the tournament champion but also about creating opportunities for young footballers to gain match experience, develop their skills and build relationships with players from other teams.
Azman said sporting activities played an important role in encouraging young people to spend their time on constructive and healthy activities.
He said involvement in football could help develop discipline, teamwork and resilience while encouraging youths to take greater responsibility towards themselves and their communities.
“The youth are an important asset who will shape the future of the country, particularly Sabah,” he said.
Azman, who is also chairman of Sabah Net Sdn Bhd, urged young people to make good use of their time by participating in activities that could add value to themselves, their families and their communities.
The involvement of FAM-licensed referees also provides players with exposure to organised officiating and competitive match conditions.
