There’s a notion that only Malaysians are able to make fun of Malaysia, and that’s been enforced long before the controversy of the ex-Singaporean comedian, Jocelyn Chia’s show.

But, considering Malaysia and Singapore have been neighbours and counterparts since the beginning of their existence, could Chia be wrong?

Yes, she may be to legendary shuttler, Lee Chong Wei, who, in a Facebook post, suggested that Malaysians and Singaporeans should just let the *damn* competitiveness go at this point.

He wrote, “Haiyaa, want to do such low jokes ke? Malaysians and Singaporeans have always loved each other. Why like that, why like that?”

Datuk Lee Chong Wei emphasized on the importance of creating goodwill and tolerance between communities instead of pitting each other against themselves.

“Spread love, not hate, people. If you don’t know how to joke, don’t need to do anything. Just sit back and relax and let the names I mentioned (JackNeo CK, Mark Lee Kok Huang, Wang Lei 王雷 and Thia Henry) do their work.”

“Malaysia and Singapore, inseparable,” he wrote.

We, as Southeast Asian, need to have each others’ back, especially considering the racism we experience from the Western world.

Can we please do better and be supportive of our Asian counterparts?
