Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim congratulated Datuk Mutang Tagal on his election as the 20th president of the Dewan Negara on Monday, February 19. Anwar expressed his hope that the former Bukit Mas MP would fulfil his responsibilities to the best of his abilities.

Mutang's election marks a significant milestone as he becomes the first leader from the Lun Bawang ethnic group to be appointed as the president of the Senate. Anwar highlighted that this appointment demonstrates the MADANI Government's commitment to recognizing and ensuring the space for voices, opinions, and representation from every segment of the population, including the Orang Ulu in Parliament.

Mutang succeeds Tan Sri Dr Wan Junaidi Tuanku Jaafar, who resigned before his appointment as the new Governor of Sarawak on January 26. During the Special Session of the Second Term of the 15th Parliament of the Dewan Negara held today, Anwar proposed Mutang's name as the sole candidate for the position.

Mutang, 69, who previously served as the Member of Parliament for Bukit Mas from 1982 to 1990, holds a Master of Business Administration (MBA) from Curtin University. He currently holds several positions, including President of the Orang Ulu Chamber of Commerce and Industry (OUCCI).

Mutang Tagal's election as the president of the Dewan Negara has been met with widespread support and praise from various quarters. Leaders from different political parties have congratulated him on his new role and expressed confidence in his ability to lead the upper house effectively.

In his role as the president of the Senate, Mutang Tagal is expected to play a crucial role in ensuring the smooth functioning of Parliament and upholding its integrity. His experience as a former Member of Parliament and his leadership in various capacities make him well-suited for this important position.

Mutang Tagal's appointment also reflects Malaysia's commitment to inclusivity and diversity in its political leadership. As the first leader from the Lun Bawang ethnic group to hold this position, Mutang Tagal's election is a significant step forward in ensuring that all communities in Malaysia are represented at the highest levels of government.

Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim's endorsement of Mutang Tagal further underscores the importance of this appointment. Anwar's support signals a unified approach to governance and a commitment to working together for the betterment of the country.

As he takes on his new role, Mutang Tagal will be faced with various challenges, including the need to address pressing issues facing the country and ensuring that the Dewan Negara plays a constructive role in Malaysia's democratic process. His leadership and vision will be crucial in guiding the Senate through these challenging times.

Overall, Mutang Tagal's election as the president of the Dewan Negara is a significant development in Malaysia's political landscape. His appointment has been widely welcomed, and there is optimism that he will lead with integrity and dedication, ensuring that the Senate fulfills its constitutional duties effectively.
