David Hughes is joining Manchester United's academy coaching team.

Hughes left Cardiff City earlier this summer and will be named as United's Professional Development Phase coach - mostly working with the under-21s but also across the whole 17 to 23 age group, says the Daily Mail.

Hughes had been academy manager at Cardiff City. He also coached at Shrewsbury, Watford, Wales, Aston Villa and Southampton.

As a player, Hughes came through Aston Villa's academy and made seven Premier League appearances, but was forced to retire at just 26 years old due to injuries.

His move from south Wales to Manchester comes as United seek to 'increase the coaching flexibility' across their academy.
