MANILA, Philippines — David Licauco had only kind words after Barbie Forteza praised Khalil Ramos as her best onscreen partner, saying he understands her admiration for the actor and remains thankful for his own successful partnership with Forteza.
Speaking to reporters during his contract signing with Viva Films on Friday, Licauco said he holds no ill feelings over Forteza's remarks and believes Ramos deserves the praise.
"It's true because Khalil is a very kind person. I like him too. He's really a nice person, so I'm sure that's why Barbie sees him that way," Licauco said.
"If that's her opinion, that's okay."
Forteza recently made headlines after describing Ramos, her co-star in the upcoming film “Saving Cherry,” as her "ideal leading man."
"Si Khalil is the ideal leading man. Finally, nagkaroon na ako ng leading man na maayos (Finally, I have a leading man who is truly wonderful)," Forteza said during the film's press conference.
She went on to describe Ramos as "a brilliant actor," an "actor's actor," and praised his professionalism and gentlemanly demeanor.
Despite the comparison, Licauco reflected fondly on his years with Forteza as one-half of the popular BarDa tandem.
"I'm just really grateful for the three or four years we spent together. We went through so much, worked on so many shows and endorsements, and even traveled together. I'm simply grateful for our partnership. I have nothing but praise for her, and I wish her all the best," he said.
Asked about the status of their onscreen partnership, Licauco acknowledged that both have moved on to individual projects.
"I'm not so sure, actually. I think at this point, we're both going solo. Barbie is doing her own thing. She has a lot of projects now, and I'm proud of her because that's what she's always wanted," he said.
"As for me, I'm doing my best too. It's a new experience for me. In my last show, I was paired with Jillian Ward, and I think everything went well."
When asked whether he felt he had given his all during the BarDa era, Licauco admitted he was not perfect but believes he grew throughout their partnership.
"Maybe I wasn't perfect. There were times when I was late for tapings, but as our partnership went on, I stopped being late," he said.
"As for my acting, I think I did well. I mean, I did win an award, so..."
Licauco and Forteza rose to prominence as the hit pairing "BarDa" after starring as Fidel and Klay in the acclaimed historical fantasy series “Maria Clara at Ibarra.” They later reunited in “Maging Sino Ka Man,” the historical war drama “Pulang Araw,” and the romantic film “That Kind of Love.”
Licauco is entering a new chapter in his career after signing a series contract with Viva Films in partnership with ALV Talent Circuit. The actor said he looks forward to exploring new opportunities and showcasing his versatility in future projects.
