David Lynch extended his wonderfully strange style to a New York City Sanitation public service announcement back in 1991.

The black and white anti-littering video has resurfaced following the director's death aged 78 which was announced on Thursday, 16 January.

Eerie music, echoing Angelo Badalamenti's score to some of Twin Peaks, accompanied scenes of New Yorkers throwing trash out which is pounced upon by rats emerging from a dark hiding place.

NYC Sanitation paid tribute to Lynch as they re-released the "unforgettable" footage.

“RIP to a visionary filmmaker and a pioneer of the Trash Revolution,” they said.
