After hectic campaigning and a day after polling for the Sonepat Municipal Corporation (MC), candidates in the fray not only speculated on the voter turnout in all wards and at all polling booths but also spent their time with their supporters and friends.

However, who will win will be cleared on May 13, but after a low voter turnout, the close contest is being seen between the ruling party, the BJP and the Congress in the Sonepat MC elections.

The polling for the mayor and councillors for 22 wards of the MC was concluded peacefully on Sunday at 264 polling booths here. The final voter turnout was 48.2 percent in Sonepat.

A total of 1,42,688 voters, including 76,595 male voters, 66,092 female voters and one other voter, exercised their franchise on Sunday to elect a mayor and councillors for their wards.

After concluding the polling, the candidates have started speculating regarding their vote shares and making strategies for the counting day, which is scheduled for May 13.

Some candidates called the meeting of their supporters and assessed the votes cast to them per booth and even the intelligence agencies are also busy preparing reports about the MC polls on Monday.

BJP’s mayoral candidate Rajiv Jain held a meeting with the members of the booth management committees and discussed all possible angles regarding the election campaigning, voting and upcoming result declaration.

Jain began his day with cycling in his vicinity and met the people residing in the area and discussed electoral politics with them. Although during the meeting with the people, Jain was seen confident about his win despite the low percentage of voter turnout.

He also thanked the people for supporting him in the elections. Scores of people, party office bearers and workers also reached his home and discussed the voters’ trend with them.

During the meeting with the members of the booth management committee, they said that even if overall voter turnout was low, their own voters had cast their votes in their favour at the polling stations with full commitment.

Jain thanked all the party workers and said that with the hard efforts of all the party workers unitedly, the ‘Lotus’ will definitely bloom in Sonepat.

Kamal Diwan, Congress’ mayoral candidate, also held rounds of meetings with his supporters and discussed the voting scenario in wards and various polling booths.

Diwan said the election was good, and reports have been taken from all the ward candidates and the party workers regarding polling.

The Congress’ mayoral candidate said the residents in Sonepat have voted for Congress for the overall development of the city. The Congress will win with a good margin on May 13.
