Days after low-intensity blasts triggered security concerns and panic among citizens in Amritsar and Jalandhar, several colleges in Amritsar and Baba Bakala on Thursday received bomb threats via email.

The threat, which later turned out to be a hoax, mentioned bomb explosions between May 7 and May 9 across several cities in Punjab, including Amritsar, Adampur and Fatehgarh Sahib.

The threat email was received by the admissions office of a private college in Manawala.

“We immediately reported it to the police, following which bomb squads and police teams were rushed to the college. We were later informed that it was a hoax and there was no need to panic. Similar bomb threats have earlier been received by several schools in Amritsar as well,” a spokesperson for the college management said.

The email, claiming to be sent by the Khalistan National Army, mentioned Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann and Union Minister of State Ravneet Bittu while issuing threats against them. It also referred to Bhagwant Mann’s ‘Shukrana Yatra’.

The email further mentioned the explosion in Khasa near the cantonment area in Amritsar, for which the Khalistan Liberation Army had claimed responsibility.

An Amritsar Police spokesperson said the threat was a hoax and added that security personnel across the city had been alerted.
