Kota Kinabalu: City Hall (DBKK) is gearing up to combat littering in non-designated areas with a robust action strategy.
This is one of the initiatives to reduce rubbish pollution, particularly in the sea, rivers and coastline, which is an increasingly serious issue that must be tackled collaboratively with everyone, including the general public.
Meanwhile, fluctuations in the sea breeze last month are believed to be responsible for the rubbish detected on the surface of Kota Kinabalu’s seas and coastline, particularly around Jesselton Point’s ferry terminal and the Kota Kinabalu Market.
To address this, the DBKK’s Solid Waste Management Department responded immediately by dispatching assets to clear the area.

According to DBKK’s findings, the majority of the garbage floating in Kota Kinabalu seas, rivers and coastline is from villages and houses along the riverbanks, as well as islands off the city.
As a short-term solution, DBKK will place waste traps in water villages where the situation is urgent, such as Kg Numbak and the Saga squatter settlement, as well as select suitable boats for cleaning duties.
The DBKK’s Sea and River Cleaning Unit, part of the Solid Waste Management Department, also monitors and cleans the sea in collaboration with appointed concessionaires at the Sembulan River estuary and the Anjung Senja coastline, including rubbish traps in front of Imago, Sabah Parks Jetty and Likas Bay, among other locations.
Cleaning works is done according to the set schedule.
DBKK cautions the general public not to throw waste into rivers, seas and beaches.
