Kota Kinabalu: Luyang Assemblyman Samuel Wong wants City Hall (DBKK) to carry out a full assessment of flash flood-prone areas along Jalan Gunung Bintang and Lorong Muntahan, where flooding is becoming increasingly serious.
The areas include the stretch near Lok Tien Dim Sum on Jalan Gunung Bintang and the section near Kedai Kopi Tenom Ngiong Chap on Lorong Muntahan.
Samuel said the recurring floods have hit businesses and also residents of Jindo and Taman Dixon, as the roads are important access routes for the community.
He recently visited the locations with representatives from DBKK’s Engineering, Landscape and Cleaning Departments. He also spoke with shop owners to understand the problems they face.
“I have requested DBKK to conduct a thorough assessment of these flood-prone areas to identify the root causes of the recurring flash floods and determine what measures are needed to address the problem effectively,” he said.
“If drainage capacity is insufficient or the existing drainage system requires upgrading, DBKK should identify the necessary improvements and propose appropriate solutions.
“Residents and business owners deserve a proper solution to this recurring problem.
“We need to identify the root cause, determine the necessary infrastructure improvements and ensure that appropriate action is taken to reduce the risk of future flash floods,” he said.
He said the problem should not be treated as a recurring inconvenience whenever heavy rain falls.
A proper technical assessment is needed to determine whether the floods are caused by inadequate drainage capacity, blocked drains, insufficient water flow or other factors, he added.
Samuel said flash floods disrupt access, affect daily activities and create difficulties for residents throughout Jindo who use the roads every day.
He urged DBKK to take the matter seriously and work towards a long-term solution rather than rely on temporary or reactive measures after flooding occurs.
