DBKK urged to explain demolition despite stop-work order

Kota Kinabalu: Tanjung Aru Assemblyman Datuk Junz Wong has called on Kota Kinabalu City Hall (DBKK) to explain claims that demolition work at the Rumah Pangsa Tanjung Aru site continued despite a stop-work instruction.

He said residents had written to DBKK on Oct 6 claiming that the instruction was issued at about 8am on Oct 3, but demolition work allegedly continued.

They also reported that summonses had been issued.

“Residents claimed the demolition took place about 10 metres from their building without proper netting or water spraying,” Wong said in a statement, Tuesday.

“They reported strong vibrations and cracks in beams, columns and walls.

“They also alleged that roofing suspected of containing asbestos was left at ground level without containment,” he said.

Junz called for an immediate inspection involving the Department of Occupational Safety and Health Sabah and other relevant authorities.

He also asked that residents be provided with the pre-demolition condition surveys reportedly conducted in May, and that further piling or construction work proceed only under verified safety controls.

“A stop-work instruction must have practical force. Issuing a summons cannot become a substitute for stopping activities that may endanger the public,” he said.

He added that the developer and contractors must answer for how the work was carried out, while DBKK must account for how the site was supervised.
