The Metro Manila Film Festival entry “I’mPerfect,” a Filipino film led by actors with Down syndrome, has continued to draw audiences in Metro Manila weeks after the festival, prompting comments of support from Mamamayang Liberal Partylist Rep. Leila de Lima who cited its focus on inclusivity and disability awareness.
De Lima said the film resonated with her on a personal level, noting that she has a child and a grandchild with autism. She said the movie helps raise awareness about the needs and capabilities of persons with disabilities, including those with Down syndrome.
“The film’s emphasis on inclusivity is striking. We need to understand that persons with disabilities are capable. They have their own needs, their own emotions, and their own agency.”
She said the story addresses the challenges surrounding acceptance, particularly in portraying how two people with Down syndrome fall in love and seek independence.
“The days of hiding them, feeling shame, or treating them as liabilities should be long over. They are not liabilities at all.”
De Lima also cited the performances of lead actors Krystel Go and Earl Amaba, saying they were able to carry the film.
“They can stand on their own as we can see in the movie. The plot, the storyline of the movie is very good,” she said.
She added that films such as “I’mPerfect” are needed to broaden public understanding of the issues faced by persons with disabilities and said she intends to pursue legislation that would support sectors including those with Down syndrome and autism.
In closing, de Lima encouraged audiences to continue watching the film.
“Malaki pong leksyon ang makukuha natin dito, so, please, please. I am inviting you and encouraging you to watch this film, ‘I’mPerfect,’” she said.
The film, which won Best Picture and the Jury Prize for Best Ensemble at the 2025 MMFF, expanded its cinema run from about 60 theaters to nearly 100 across malls in Metro Manila.
“I’mPerfect” is produced by Sylvia Sanchez-Atayde under Nathan Studios, co-produced by CMB Film Services, and directed by Sigrid Andrea Bernardo.
