Deadliest Catch opens new season with emotional message from deckhand who died filming show

The season 22 premiere of Deadliest Catch opened with an emotional tribute to late deckhand Todd Meadows.

Meadows, 25, died in February after falling overboard while filming for Discovery Channel’s popular high-risk reality series, which follows a group of king crab fishermen in Alaska as they embark on the perilous journey to catch the seafood delicacy in the Bering Sea. The show’s title is a nod to the high risk of injury or death linked to the line of work.

Friday’s episode began with poignant footage of Meadows aboard the Aleutian Lady fishing vessel, sharing his excitement about having achieved his lifelong dream and his hopes for his three young children.

“We’re ready to get out there, and get fishing,” he tells the cameras. “It’s been one of my dreams and goals to make it up here. I’ve been to Alaska a few times, but never to fish.

“Everything I’ve experienced up here, so far, is just so much bigger. Everything is scaled up. Smells different, feels different. There’s a lot of risk that comes into it,” he continues. “But I just want my kids to work [toward] their dreams and goals and don’t let anything slow you down.”

The segment concludes with Meadows eagerly preparing to take off on his next fishing expedition. “It’s gonna be fun,” he adds. “I’m just fortunate that I fell in love with it.”

It was previously announced that season 22 would feature footage Meadows had filmed before the incident. Footage of the fatal incident itself, however, will not be aired out of respect for his family.

“We don’t want to see any footage from the accident and do not want Discovery to air any of that footage or make money off of our son’s death,” Meadows’s mother, Angela, told TMZ in March. “We hope they only air good things of Todd on that boat.”

Meadows’s death was confirmed in March, with a recent autopsy report listing his cause of death as “drowning with probable hypothermia” and “submersion of body in cold water.” His death was ruled an accident.

Captain Rick Shelford, who has been a regular on the show since 2023, called the loss the “most tragic day in the history of the Aleutian Lady.”

“His love for fishing and his strong work ethic earned everyone’s respect right away,” he said. “His smile was contagious, and the sound of his laughter coming up the wheelhouse stairs or over the deck hailer is something we will carry with us always.”

A spokesperson for the Discovery Channel said his death was “a devastating loss,” adding: “We are deeply saddened by the tragic passing of Todd Meadows. Our hearts are with his loved ones, his crewmates, and the entire fishing community during this incredibly difficult time.”

Deadliest Catch airs Fridays at 8 p.m. ET/PT on the Discovery Channel.
