A devastating collision involving a tour bus and two lorries occurred just after midnight on July 3 along the North-South Expressway near KM80.7 in Ayer Hitam, Johor, resulting in the deaths of two passengers and injuries to 16 others.

The crash, which happened around 12:30am, involved a tour bus carrying 46 individuals, a tanker lorry, and a tow truck. Emergency services were alerted at 12:44am, prompting the Ayer Hitam Fire and Rescue Department to dispatch a team to the scene.

Upon arrival, rescuers encountered a chaotic scene of twisted metal and trapped victims. According to Senior Fire Officer Md Isa Masngun, two passengers had been pinned within the wreckage and were declared dead at the scene by medical personnel. Fourteen men, one woman, and the bus driver sustained varying degrees of injury and were promptly transported to nearby hospitals for treatment.

Emergency crews worked diligently to extract the injured and deceased using specialized rescue tools. The operation concluded by approximately 3:00am. The remaining 28 passengers, including 27 men and one woman, were unharmed and assisted off the bus.

Both the 42-year-old tow truck driver and the 33-year-old tanker lorry driver escaped the crash with no serious injuries.

While the cause of the collision remains under investigation, the incident has intensified ongoing public concern over the safety of long-distance travel by bus in Malaysia, particularly during the overnight hours when driver fatigue and low visibility can heighten risks.

This crash follows a series of recent tragedies involving public transport. Earlier this year, a separate incident involving a tour bus claimed the lives of 15 university students, triggering renewed scrutiny of bus safety standards and operator accountability.

The authorities are expected to conduct a thorough investigation into the Johor crash, examining possible factors such as road conditions, vehicle maintenance records, and driver alertness.

In the meantime, families of the victims await further details, and the nation is once again reminded of the persistent dangers faced by passengers traveling on Malaysia’s highways.

As the injured receive treatment and authorities gather evidence, calls for stricter enforcement and improved oversight in the bus industry are likely to grow louder in the wake of this latest tragedy.
