A dramatic shootout with the police on Jalan Permatang Baru, Sungai Lokan in Butterworth left two men dead. The suspects were believed to be on their way to commit a crime, either a robbery or drug trafficking.
Penang police chief Datuk Hamzah Ahmad recounted the events, explaining that at 2:05 am, a special investigation unit from the Criminal Investigation Department (CID) noticed a suspicious Perodua Myvi at the intersection of Jalan Pokok Sena and Jalan Permatang Baru, Sungai Dua.
“The police approached the vehicle and instructed the driver to stop for an inspection. Instead, the driver sped off and fired several shots at the officers,” Hamzah stated during a press conference at the Penang Police Contingent Headquarters today.
The police gave chase, pursuing the vehicle for about two kilometers before it skidded off the road. As the officers attempted to inspect the car, the suspects opened fire again, forcing the police to return fire in self-defense. Once the situation was under control, an inspection revealed that both the driver and the front passenger, aged 41 and 51 respectively, had died from gunshot wounds.
Further examination of the vehicle uncovered two Glock and SW 38 pistols, along with 176 bullets. Investigations indicated that the firearms had been sourced from a neighbouring country. Additionally, checks revealed that the Perodua Myvi was stolen, registered to a man in Terengganu, and its road tax had expired in 2021.
Hamzah also noted that both men had extensive criminal histories, with 12 and 13 previous records respectively. Authorities are continuing investigations to determine if the suspects were affiliated with any secret societies.
The case is being investigated under Section 307 of the Penal Code, which deals with attempted murder, and Section 8 of the Arms Act 1960, which pertains to illegal possession of firearms and ammunition.
